In the past millions of years new species have come and gone. And many have gone extinct because of human activity. The first such as the ice age when humans evolved and hunted other animals. The mammoth for example went extinct because of human hunters. Next, in the 15th century the do-do bird was discovered by human sailors. They found that the bird was very tasty and hunted it. Dogs ate the birds eggs. Near the end of the 15th century the do-do bird was extinct. Now animals are mostly threatened by habitat loss and a loss of food. We destroy animals' territory and home when we cut down forests, build highways, and plow out plants. The black rhino is one of these seriously endangered animals. Poachers hunt and kill rhinos for their horns and skin. Another is the orangutan. We cut down forests and destroy this amazing ape's habitat. Almost 90 percent of the animals extinct on the planet are gone because of human activity. We must do anything in our power to save these amazing animals.
